I thought to take it one step further and share a white paper written by J.D. Associates: "5 Creative Ways to Gain and Retain Customers."

These five ideas are ready to be downloaded by you. But first, let me give you an excerpt.

Building customer loyalty is about getting to know your customers. Rank them by profitability. Sounds mercenary but you need profitable customers to keep your margins.  Your retail POS system can help you track that information. Find out how they know about you. Was it through word-of-mouth?  Advertising? Your POS software can track that information.  And you might want to keep customers' birthdays in your retail POS system so you can encourage them or their spouses to visit before a birthday (and many other gift-buying opportunities) to purchase that perfect present.

If you're going to start tracking customer intelligence, then make sure you are storing important customer information in your point of sale system and then use that information to urge your customers to return into your store sooner than they may have planned.
