Editor's note:This article, from the March 2011 issue of the Retail Source, a J.D. Associates retail newsletter, is worth publishing as a blog post. It's a short list of famous quotes from men, which leaves me thinking: where are the quotes from Meg Whitman, or Indira Gandhi or Eleanor Roosevelt and the slew of other successful, famous, quotable women?
How to Motivate Retail Employees and Team Members
by Barbara Farfan, About.com Guide
Who knows more about motivation than those who have used it to achieve world-famous success? Retail leaders and entrepreneurs can find inspiration about how to motivate yourself and others in the words of some of the most successful people in history:
Lee Iacocca, former CEO of Chrysler Corporation, author, and philanthropist says this about how to motivate employees:
"Start with good people, lay out the rules, communicate with your employees, motivate them and reward them. If you do all those things effectively, you can't miss."
Rick Pitino, NCAA championship winning coach says this about how to motivate individuals:
"The only way to get people to like working hard is to motivate them. Today, people must understand why they're working hard. Every individual in an organization is motivated by something different."

Tom Landry, Dallas Cowboys coach for 20 consecutive winning seasons says this about team motivation:
"I don't believe in team motivation. I believe in getting a team prepared so it knows it will have the necessary confidence when it steps on a field and be prepared to play a good game."
Zig Ziglar, author and world renown motivational speaker says this about motivating others:
"People often say that motivation doesn't last. Well, neither does bathing -- that's why we recommend it daily."
Rupert Murdoch, global media mogul says this about motivating people:
"In motivating people, you've got to engage their minds and their hearts. I motivate people, I hope, by example -- and perhaps by excitement, by having productive ideas to make others feel involved."
Dwight D. Eisenhower, 34th President of the United States said this about how to motivate the masses:
"Motivation is the art of getting people to do what you want them to do because they want to do it."
Scott Adams, creator of the "Dilbert" comic strip says this about demotivation:
"I'm slowly becoming a convert to the principle that you can't motivate people to do things, you can only demotivate them. The primary job of the manager is not to empower but to remove obstacles."
John Gray, bestselling author of "Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus" says this about male and female motivation:
"Men are motivated and empowered when they feel needed. Women are motivated and empowered when they feel cherished."
George Foreman, two-time World Heavyweight Boxing Champion says this about motivating dreams:
"Everybody wants to be somebody. The thing you have to do is give them confidence they can. You have to give a kid a dream."
