Retail Pro® Tips

Tech Tip: Checking Your Tape Backup

Backing up your data on a daily basis is a very integral part of securing your store's data.

You should, on a daily basis, check your tape backup routine to make sure
the tape backup is running correctly.

To perform this routine check, do the following:

Every Morning
  • Open Backup Exec from your desktop or from your program files
  • Click on Tools > Reports > View
  • Verify that the backup completed successfully
  • Replace the Backup tape with the next day’s Backup Tape
  • Remove completed backup tape and take off site

Trainer Tip: Getting a range check error when trying to swipe a credit card at POS?

Symptom

When trying to authorize a credit card transaction, a dialog box "range check error" will appear right as you go into the credit card dialog window of the tender screen. After closing the box, the only option for the cashier is to click OK on the credit card tender screen. The receipt from this transaction will be updated without an authorization or reference number.

Solution

Go to System Preferences > Point of Sale > Credit Cards and look for any credit card range defined without a card type specified. You probably have a credit card range with no card name assigned to it or there is a duplicate of an existing range. To correct remove it from the list. If the range is not a duplicate then simply assign a card type to it. Save the changes. You should now be able to use credit cards with no more range check error.
