Microsoft® RMS Tip
Do You Have a Backup?
It may be tomorrow; it may be five years from now. But, sooner or later, you will have to restore data from a backup file. A major responsibility of any software administrator is to ensure that a (very) recent backup of all important data exists. There are numerous ways to achieve this. Do you know how your system is being backed up? If you are manually backing up your data, are you saving the data to a disk other than your server's hard drive? If you run a scheduled tape backup, do you know how to check the log to see if backups are running as scheduled? If you answered "no" to any of these questions, you should contact the support desk.
Here are instructions for manually backing up RMS data:
- Enter Store Operations Manager
- Click on Utilities menu
- Click on "Backup Database"
- Name the backup file, based on the date. (For instance, 06/13/06.bck would be the backup file for June 13, 2006).
- Save the file to a location other than your server's hard drive. This can be done several ways, contact the support desk if you need assistance.
You should be copying a backup file, routinely, to an offsite location.
